get a job!

In this market, I'm getting a lot of resumes and in many instances it is from individuals that do not need to find a job right away. They just need to know that their skills are marketable and that opportunities exist for them.

Fear

Much of the responses are based in a level of fear around the the uncertainty of economy. The simple fact is that companies are hiring, companies are laying people off, but this is happening regardless of the economy. Granted some organizations are laying more people off, but other organizations are growing and they are hiring more individuals. The real difference, I am finding, is that organizations can be pickier.

Picky

Some skills will always be in demand, in my industry, the IT sector, the technology is cyclical, but the ability to learn technology remains. Organizations are pickier because they can afford to be, but if you want to remain viable as a candidate, you need to make sure your skills are up to date and that you have the skills necessary to make it in any environment. That means, your soft skills. Let's face it, your knowledge base will get you in the door. How you interact with people will keep you there. Individuals get hired on their ability to deal with, and handle people. If you have great tech skills but cannot deal well with the other kids in the sandbox, you won't stay in the sandbox for long.
