Today I'm going to provide some simple truths about work. Nobody really mentions them, but many of us, that have been around for a while know them. Sometimes, it's a good idea to review them again! Here they are, in no particular order:
"You will be paid the lowest possible amount they can get away with."
Organizations will always try to pay as little as possible for as much as possible from you, the employee. This is the way it works. If you bring enough to the table they will pay you more, but as a rule, if you want more money for your job, start looking around for the next big thing!
"You'll never make good money working for other people."
This has always been true and will hold true for a long time to come. Simply put, organizations pay you for the position, and not what you know, until you get to the top level, but that will take time. If you are really that smart and that connected that you are capable of running a business, start your own!
"They will dump as much work on you as you will say yes too"
Who? Everyone! Simply put, we as human beings will generally look for an out, if someone is willing to do the work, and we get the credit, guess what ..... ! I'm not saying don't be willing to help, but don't get abused by the system, and make sure you get the credit!
"They don't really mean it"
This is more about the management versus your co-workers. In management their are those that truly look out for the employee, there are those who get the job done regardless, and there are those that are out for themselves. Guess which is the one you should stay away from?
"Get noticed - Get promoted"
Getting noticed, in a good way, is important. Get noticed for doing great work, get noticed for helping out and being knowledgeable. These things will get you the promotion. Not right away, but they will get it for you!
"You don't go to work to be liked"
Why are you there? Too make friends? Not really. If that happens, that is a pleasant side benefit! You are there for your career and to learn enough to move on to the next phase. That means you need to be prepared to work and think strategically. Will this person hurt or help my career, will this workload help me or not? You have to learn which is which and use that knowledge to your benefit!
"Perception is reality"
That pretty much says it all! The old saying dress for the job you want, not the job you have holds true! If you want that promotion, do everything to get it, including, without being cocky, acting like you have it!
"Information is power"
The more information you have about the individuals in the company the better off you are, know the direct lines of authority, but more importantly, learn the dotted lines. These are usually the more important ones!
"It's only a game"
Yup, it is! Know the rules, and know how to bend them (liberally if need be), but never break them!
"Trust no-one"
Simple and to the point! Everyone in business is out for themselves and will turn on you quickly to protect themselves. Be aware of that and do what you can to make sure no one can touch you!
There you go. The rules! There are no numbers because they are all important. The priority will change according to the organization and scenario you are in, but they will always be there. Learn them, understand them and use them.
